Description

This reflection nebula is located only 450 light years away in the constellation of Taurus at a declination of +28 degrees.  It is spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 1 light year.

The nebula is associated with the young star V* RY Tau (RY Tauri), a 9.3 magnitude Orion Variable star.  Eventually the star will clear out all of the dust and gas on its way to becoming a main sequence star like our sun.

The wide dark lane through the nebula is curious.  Normally I would think that this is a dust lane in front of the nebula, but the stars behind it look similar to those of the rest of the background image.  It looks like a void area instead of a dust lane, but why would such a lane be cleared out like that?
