Description

The Eagle Nebula was made famous through the Hubble Space Telescope’s great image of the “Pillars
of Creation”. These “pillars” can be seen just left of centre in this image. The nebula lies about 5,700 ly
away in the Sagittarius Arm of our Milky Way’s spiral structure. It hosts an 8,100 star open star cluster
(just above the “pillars” in the image), of which we can see only a fraction due to obscuring by the
dust and clouds of the nebula.  This region shows active star formation in several areas, including the
“pillars”. The nebula forms part of a much larger diffuse emission nebula, designated IC 4703.
