Description

Around 10,000 years ago, the star that formed this supernova remnant exploded in the constellation Cassiopeia. In 1955, the exploded remnants were incorrectly classified by George Abell as a planetary nebula and included in his catalogue of planetary nebulae as Abell 85. It is still known by Abell 85, and also CTB1, which is Caltech's list B of 110 cosmic radio sources, compiled in 1960. This supernova remnant is about 100 light years across and roughly 10,000 light years away. It has a faint "popped balloon" structure that also resembles a head of garlic. This image is the result of 30 hours of exposures gathered over 7 nights in September of 2023.
