Description

A difficult capture with an old DSLR in order to pick up the dark dust clouds that surround it without blowing up the noisy sensor.

Also reveals how desperate I am for that coma corrector, which should be arriving early next week (I hope!). I was reluctant to crop out too much more of the frame and lose more of the dust while maintaining the composition of the image with the nebula towards the centre.

The brightness of the background could be brought up to highlight the dust more but I couldn't manage this without introducing horrible amounts of over stretching the noise in the image.

I'd like to revisit this target when it is both higher in the sky and with a more sensitive mono camera in the future and really bring out that dust without having to rely on increasing my exposures to ridiculous lengths. 300 seconds with the DSLR and EQ5 seem to be near the limits though I could probably push 6-8 minutes. I will need to try 10 minute exposures again sson now I have achieved a method for consistently good guiding.

Captured shooting towards the light pollution of London in the North with a SkyTech CLS clip filter, my first nebula target with it and third time out with the filter. A definite help when shooting towards such strong sky glow and light pollution.

Dithered every two frames, 16 pixels in a spiral pattern spiral pattern. Guiding remained excellent once again at sub 0.7" RMS all night long when enough settle time was left between dithers. 50 frames out of 61 captures were stacked for a total of 250mins or 4.16 hours.

Capture was done with KStars on my Raspberry Pi 4 4GB running Astroberry.

Stacking with Astro Pixel Processor which is fast becoming my favourite stacking tool, so many options and very user friendly too. I look forward to trying mosaics as I hear it is second to none in that regard.

Processing in StarTools yet again, I'm still happy with it for the modest price versus alternatives and I can get 'good enough' processing done in very short order while I work in the background.

Final tweaks including Hasta La Vista Green, Astronomy Tools Action Set and adjusment layer tweaks to curves and saturation/lightness in Photoshop 2020.
