These are relatively young open star clusters. NGC663 ("Lawn Mower" open cluster) and NGC 659 (the "Yin-Yang" open cluster) were discovered on November 3, 1787 by Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), the sister of the famous astronomer, William Hershel, with whom she worked with all her career. William gets the claim, which was the practice at the time - to credit the head of the observatory. Being careful scientists, they kept accurate logs and in the details, Caroline is credited with their discovery. The painting of her below (from Wikipedia) is when she was 78, one year after winning the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1828. It's nice to read about women making major advances in STEM two and half centuries ago. Stories like this really inspire my daughter, who is in her second year of engineering at university. They inspire me too.
