Description

With calibration frames. Needed to reduce effect of Lum.

M31, also known as the **Andromeda Galaxy**¹²³, is a **spiral galaxy** in the constellation Andromeda, about 2.5 million light years away from Earth¹². It is the largest member of the **Local Group** of galaxies and along with the Milky Way, both dominate the Local Group¹³. It is the nearest large spiral to the Milky Way¹³.

M31 was discovered by **Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi**, a Persian astronomer, in 964 CE, who described it as a \"small cloud\"¹². It was later catalogued by **Charles Messier** in 1764 as the 31st object in his list of nebulous objects¹². It was first resolved into individual stars by **William Herschel** in 1785 using a large telescope¹².

M31 has a diameter of about 220,000 light years and contains about one trillion stars¹². It has two prominent satellite galaxies, M32 and M110, and several smaller ones¹². It is estimated to have a supermassive black hole at its center with a mass of about 140 million times that of the Sun¹².

M31 has an apparent magnitude of **3.4** and can be seen with the naked eye, even in areas with moderate light pollution¹². It appears as a diffuse patch of light near the star Mirach in Andromeda¹². It is best seen from the northern hemisphere during autumn and winter months².
