Description

NGC 281 is a diffuse emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia.  Discovered by E.E. Barnard in 1883, it is known to modern amateurs as the "Pacman" nebula, due to the mouth-like dark lane of dust.  Within the nebula is an open cluster, IC 1590, whose stars provide the energy to ionize its gases, causing it to glow.
