Description

M106 is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici.  It is relatively near to us at a distance of around 23 light-years and its physical diameter is 135,000 light-years (a little larger than our own Milky Way galaxy).  Evidence from radio telescopes indicates that a supermassive black hole sits at the center of M106.  Below and to the right is the spiral galaxy NGC 4248 seen edge on.  It sits at a distance of 60 million light-years but still might be a gravitational companion of M106.  The fuzzy blob to the left of M106 is the irregular galaxy PGC 39615.
