I practiced astrophotography on argentic film in the 70s and 80s with a 320mm Newton and a 120mm telescope, but given the light pollution, I put this passion on hold for more than 35 years.
Two years ago my granddaughter asked me for a telescope for Christmas, I bought her a small motorized Skywatcher.
When I saw what we could do with a 150mm, I looked deeper into the subject…
While searching on the internet I came across superb photos taken under the same sky as me. Hence the realization that photography of the deep sky had become possible from the garden. Until then, I didn't think it was possible to get rid of light pollution to this extent (7 on the Bortle scale).
After a lot of reflection I decided on the following concept (to start):
- Short exposure technique (1s to 5s) in “Lucky Imaging” with SharpCap, without autoguiding.
- An ASI533 cooled color camera
- Open Newton to optimize the integration time and access large objects.
- An Antlia Triband Filter which allows the photo of Nebulae and galaxies.
So I made a small observatory at the bottom of the garden and bought the necessary equipment:
- a 250/1200 Skywatcher with an F/D reduced to 3.5 thanks to a Nexus of 0.75.
- a 150/600 with an F/D reduced to 3 thanks to the Nexus to reduce exposure times.
Not ready to spend hours with monochrome or long exposures.

il y a deux ans ma petite fille m’a demandé un télescope pour Noel, je lui ai acheté un petit Skywatcher motorisé.
Lorsque j’ai vu ce qu’on pouvait faire avec un 150mm, j'ai approfondi le sujet…
En cherchant sur internet je suis tombé sur de superbes photos réalisées sous le même ciel que moi. D'où la prise de conscience que la photo du ciel profond était devenue possible depuis le jardin. Je ne pensais pas jusqu'alors, qu’il était possible de s’affranchir à ce point de la pollution lumineuse (7 sur l'échelle de Bortle).
Après pas mal de réflexions j’ai tranché pour le concept suivant (pour commencer) :
- Technique des poses courtes (1s à 5s) en « Lucky Imaging » avec SharpCap, sans autoguidage.
- Une caméra couleur refroidie ASI533
- Newton ouvert pour optimiser la durée d’intégration et accéder aux grands objets .
- Un Filtre Triband Antlia qui permet la photo des Nébuleuses et des galaxies.
J’ai donc fait un petit observatoire au fond du jardin et acheté le matériel nécessaire:
- un 250/1200 Skywatcher avec un F/D réduit à 3,5 grâce à un Nexus de 0.75.
- un 150/600 avec un F/D réduit à 3 grâce au Nexus pour réduire les temps de pose.
Pas mûr pour passer des heures avec le monochrome ou les longues poses.
