University of Arizona graduate in Physics and Astronomy. Software engineer by schooling and on-the-job training. I had a work-at-home business in the 90s that gave me the time to build an observatory and collaborate with the Center for Backyard Astrophysics, obtaining light curves of cataclysmic variables using and 8-inch SCT and then a 14-in SCT on an AP1200 mount.
I was having so much fun I made a career switch, returning to the University of Arizona, working on the Catalina Sky Survey searching for near-Earth objects. In 2009 I became the Principal Investigator of the program. In 2012 I became the Deputy Principal Investigator of the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission. At that point, my primary instrument moved from a 1.5m telescope to a Powerpoint projector! Four years later, at launch, I decided I needed to step away from the desk while I could still stand up.
Returning to Colorado for part of the year and my observatory in 2020, I began considering which way to go. I have a AP 155mm EDFS refractor, a 14" Celestron SCT, on a AP1200 mount in a sturdy roll-off observatory. I also have a new AP Mach 2 mount and Redcat 51 and Samyang 135 f/2 lens for portable and wide field imagery. The rural areas around Colorado Springs have changed significantly with light pollution from the growing front range so I am investigating which areas might be most rewarding given current limitations.
I have spent the last couple of summers working with my AP155 trying to get conversant with the many tools and techniques needed to make images that reflect my personal view of color and composition in astronomy images. Just recently I began posting some images to Astrobin. I hope you will have a look.
I look forward to consulting with some of the experts here for advice and camaraderie.
