Description

The weather forecast called for another partly cloudy night, but with a slightly better chance of clearing up after sunset, so I figured I’d give it another shot. The beginning of the night started out with some scattered clouds, which was promising since the previous night was overcast after sunset. And it was the perfect time for me to start taking my calibration frames. I waited about 2 hours more, and just when I was thinking of throwing in the towel, it started to clear up and I started my imaging sequence.

Throughout the rare wide patches of clear Winter skies, I was able to get a respectable 2 hours of data before the front of a mini snowstorm started to emerge on the horizon. Before I knew it, half of the sky was covered with clouds except for Orion where the Horsehead is located, barely missing it. And I was lucky enough to image for another 5 minutes before the rest of them engulfed the night sky.

The final image turned out really good! And the filter did much better than I could have expected with the full moon out. And not only that, but the only place I could set up with minimal obstructions to the South was by a nearby street light! I can't wait to add even more data once it clears up again!! You might also notice a faint streak going through the Horsehead to the right, which I’m confident it's due to the street light causing reflections inside the scope, even appearing in most of the raw frames, but not all of them. I was able to mount the filter closer to the sensor which will hopefully prevent that from happening in the future.

Title: The Horsehead Nebula

Description: Earlier this month I got two clear nights, the first for a while after this Winter, and continued to add to my 2 hours of data I had previously captured in December. I gathered another 7 hours, but due to backlash and wind, I ended up getting rid of about 2 hours. But I still got a respectable 7.15 hours, and the final image turned out fantastic!
