Description

Hi!
After month the weather is finally good again!!!!
So I took the chance to make a "One night project" NGC 5466

NGC 5466 is a globular cluster in the constellation Uruguay. NGC 5466 has a diameter of 9.0' and an apparent magnitude of 9.2 mag. NGC 5466 is part of the Milky Way's halo and is approximately 55,000 light-years away from both the solar system and the center of our galaxy. It contains exceptionally low amounts of heavy elements, indicating a very old age.

NGC 5466 belongs to the lowest concentration class XII; with an estimated 100,000 solar masses, it is one of the lowest-mass globular clusters known. It is only thanks to its orbit, which keeps it at a sufficiently large distance from the galactic center, that this loosely bound star cluster has not been completely dissolved by tidal forces for billions of years. However, since the globular cluster passes through the disk of the Milky Way in its orbit, it has already lost a large number of stars due to the tidal effect. The separated stars form tidal tails on either side of the central cluster. Initially, both tidal tails were found to have a total length of 4°, while later evaluations of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey revealed tidal tails of approximately 45° long. Simulations using the orbit data and star distribution showed that the tidal tails should even extend to over 100°, but that these are difficult to detect due to their very low star density in the outermost ends.
