Description

Hickson Compact Group 44 (HCG44, or Leo quadruplet) is a group of galaxies in the constellation of Leo. It is composed by three spiral galaxies, the hedge-on NGC 3190 with its prominent dust lanes, the S-shaped NGC 3187 and NGC 3185 bar structure with an outer ring resembling the Greek letter Θ, and the bright elliptical galaxy (NGC 3193). NGC 3190, NGC 3187 and NGC 3193 have been grouped by Arp in his Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as ARP 316.
The galaxies in HCG 44 are generally considered as a group of galaxies gravitationally bound as they lie relatively close together, at a distance (measured with the red shift method) between 56 million LY (NGC 3185) and 73 million LY (NGC 3187) from us (source: kosmoved.ru). Two dwarf spiral galaxies also appear in the image, PGC 86788/LEDA 86788 (bottom right) at around 100 million LY and PGC 2806871/LEDA 2806871 (left of center) at around 250 million LY from the Milky Way  (source https: //cds.unistra.fr).
