Description

What to do while waiting for the main object of a night's data collection to rise high enough in the sky? Shoot a star cluster of course!

NGC 7789 is a beautiful star cluster in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It comprises up to 15000 stars and sits at a distance of about 8000 light years from earth. Its age is estimated at about 1.5 billion years, which makes it among the oldest star clusters known. Most of its stars are - due to their age - giant stars with the majority being red giants.

Its nickname "Caroline's Rose" derives from its appearance which resembles a rose blossom as well as from the name of its discovereress Caroline Herschel.
