Description

On Sunday night, November 5th, we were treated to a rare aurora in Virginia. I'm at 39 degrees north and it's rare for us to see one this far south. But, we solar activity increasing this is the second one we've seen this year. This one extended much farther into the sky than the last one. As big and bright as it was in the camera, it was barely visible to my eyes. If I hadn't known where to look I'd have probably missed it. I wasn't dark adapted though so it might have been easier if I'd had time to stay outside and watch the sky.

My camera has shifted a bit so north is about centered above the tree and east is pretty much in line with the chimney on the left.

Title: keogram

Description: The keogram takes a slice from the center of each image (top to bottom) through the night and stick them together in one summary image. It is a great way to see the night at a glance, at least near the center of the image.

Title: star trails

Description: The star trails image is made by adding all the images together over the course of the night. It shows us exactly where north and south are in the frame and shows that the aurora covered a big chunk of sky.
