Description

A favorite winter target, the Whirlpool Galaxy (also known as M51 and NGC 5194) is adjacent to the smaller companion galaxy NGC 5195.  M51 is a grand design spiral galaxy (well-defined and prominent arms) in the constellation Canes Venatici approximately 31 million light years from Earth.  At Dec +47, M51 is a circumpolar target above the 43rd parallel.  Although this particular image did not capture discrete Ha data, there is a hint of some element of it in the larger spiral arms, particularly the arm leading out to the prominent Northwest Plume tidal arm extending towards NGC 5195.

Title: Combining Mono Imaging with 2 years of OSC DSLR imaging

Description: Weaving in old DSLR OSC data is trickier than I would have imagined. The only difference between this image and Version B is the addition of 13+ hours of OSC data, going back and re-generating appropriate sub-frames prior to registration. Lesson Learned: Save the Masters, but also save the last step immediately prior to registration (debayer folder in this case) to save additional processing later.

Title: Drizzle 2x Version, back to single camera

Description: The first version was way over sharpened when developing the luminance channel, and the combined mono and OSC data was over saturated. Trying to fix those faults by going back, starting with Drizzle 2x data and only processing the mono images and paying careful attention to the sharpening particularly with BXT. Even then, I had to "rescue" some of the stars just outside the edge of the galaxy which were problematic with surrounding dark halos.
