Description

The Heart Nebula and the Soul Nebula are located about 6,000 light-years from Earth and form a huge star-forming complex that makes up part of the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way. The nebula on the right is the Heart Nebula, designated IC 1805, named for its resemblance to a human heart. On the left side is the Soul Nebula, also known as the Embryo Nebula, IC 1848 or W5. The Perseus arm lies farther from the center of the Milky Way than the arm containing our Sun. The Heart Nebula and Soul Nebula cover an area of nearly 580 light-years, covering only a small fraction of the diameter of the Milky Way, which is about 100,000 light-years across.
