Description

The Soap Bubble Nebula, or PN G75.5+1.7, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Cygnus, near the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888). It was recently discovered on June 19, 2007 and on July 6, 2008 as it is very faint.

The Omicron Team (David Vernet, Serge Brunier and myself) is proud to present this narrowband image. Serge captured the images and I processed them.

It is a mix of :

OIII : 42 x 300 sec.
Ha : 24 x 300 sec.
R (SDSS) : 14 x 300 sec.
No filter : 110 x 60sec.

The luminance is made of OIII + Ha + 0,2*R for the nebula., and only L (no filter) for the stars. Color layers are  R / G / B  =  (Ha+R) / L-(Ha+OIII) / OIII.

It's not just in the sky that there are soap bubbles. here are more on the 1 meter mirror as David cleans it. He knows exactly what he's doing 'cause he polished that mirror.

Final version is cropped. Please look at the full frame here :
