Description

LBN438 is a very faint dark nebula in the Lacerta constellation, which means lizard in Latin.  It has a surface magnitude of only 22 making this a challenging object to image well.  It is surrounded by very faint Ha emission which produces the red glow visible in the image.    Not much is known about the mechanisms that cause this type of faint glow.  It is referred to by multiple sources as ERE or Extended Red Emission.  There is much debate in the scientific community about what exactly causes it.

To resolve these features requires very dark skies and a lot of integration time.  I captured nearly 80 hours of data and only used the best 40 hours.     There are a lot of cool an very distant galaxies visible in the background if you zoom in.  Most of them are hundreds of millions light years away from us.  It is always facilitating to consider that we are looking so far back in back in time when viewing these distant galaxies.

I hope you like it.
