The Crescent nebula (NGC 6888 or Sh2-105) in Cygnus is an emission nebula formed by stellar winds from a Wolf-Rayet star colliding with a slower eject wind from when the star first became a red giant. The resulting shockwave forms the detailed structures seen in the nebula.

These images contain approximately 24h of capture using narrow band filters which isolate specific elements in the interstellar winds: H-Alpha, Oxygen-III and Sulfur-II. By capturing these different signals and combining them in different proportions, astronomers can study the distribution of material in the nebula. My first image shows the result of combining all three filters in the sequence S-H-O, in place of the usual RGB channels. This is known as the Hubble Palette thanks to an image made famous by the telescope years ago.

The second image combines only the H-Alpha filter in the Red channel with Oxygen-III replacing both the Blue and Green channels, in a palette known as H-O-O. We can notice different details can be observed especially in the Crescent itself which is rich in Oxygen.
