Description

The Andromeda Galaxy, or Messier 31, lies about 2,5 million light years away and it is the most distant object that can be seen with the naked eye (in dark skies). It has a diameter of 220 000 light years and contains more than a trillion stars making it the largest galaxy close to Milky Way.

The Milky way and the Andromeda galaxy will collide in about 4,5 billion years, merging together and probably creating an elliptical galaxy.

The image was processed like a nebula, i.e. removing the stars, bring out the colours and dust lanes and then merge it with the original HaRGB.

Ha: 32 x 300s
R: 20 x 240s
G: 23 x 240s
B: 20 x 240s
In the end 85% of the data were stacked to give the image.
