Description

NGC 1501 is a planetary nebula called the Camel’s Eye Nebula.  It is also known as the Oyster Nebula.   The central star of the planetary nebula is a pulsating star, meaning that its brightness varies regularly and periodically. In the case of NGC 1501's progenitor star, this is incredibly fast, with the star's brightness changing significantly in just half an hour. An analysis suggests that the central star is a binary star system. It is about 5,000 light-years distant and 1.3 light-years across.  It is moving away form the sum at 23 miles per second.
