Description

So it appears that I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to image the new Supernova in M101, SN 2023IXF.

Last week I was testing out a new telescope that I purchased, the AT130EDT, on M101.   I had decided to run one night of imaging using my Optolong L-Pro filter, and then use my dual narrowband filter, the Antlia ALP-T, on the second night to capture Ha data for the final image.

Started imaging with L-Pro on 17 May - 9:11 PM PST.  You can see in the broadband image that there is no indication of SN 2023IXF as of yet.  I reviewed all my FITs and it doesn't seem to appear during the imaging session, which lasted until 18 May/2:51 AM.

The second night, 18 May, I captured M101 from 9:01 PM - 11:45 PM PST, using the same telescope, but using my Antlia ALP-T dual narrowband filter.  Here (identified as final image) you can definitely see the SN.  I just happened to be imaging the target at the right time.  Wish I could have seen it actually appear while I was imaging, but in reviewing the FITS from the night, the SN appears to be there the whole time so it must have become visible between the hours of 2:51 AM and 9:01 PM PST.
