Description

A flower in the sky! Image of the Sunflower Galaxy taken January 17, 2021 just before dawn on a frosty morning from my observatory at the Deerlick Astronomy Village. This spiral galaxy has one of the most interesting textures that I've ever seen, with its clumpy arms contributing to the appearance of a sunflower. Cataloged as M63 in astronomer's Charles Messier's deep sky object tally, its 400 billion suns are more than 25 million light years away. Photons of light for this image were gathered with my C-14 telescope and ASI071 camera combo over a period of 1.5 hours.
