Description

One more from my dark sky property in AZ, Semper Tenebris!

M83 is also a pretty southerly target -- known as the "Southern Pinwheel," it has a declination of almost -30 degrees, and it came as high as 28 degrees when it crossed the meridian. So pretty low, but not quite as crazy-low as Omega Centauri!

M83 is a barred spiral galaxy that lies 15 million lightyears away, situated between the constellations Hydra and Centaurus. It's called the Southern Pinwheel for its resemblance to M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy.
