Description

Cone Nebula, Christmas Tree Nebula, Part of NGC 2264 The Christmas Tree NebulaBy Rick WigginsLocation: New Mexico Skies, Mayhill, NMImage Capture Nov 2021L= 35x600s, R=32x600s, G= 30x600s, B= 33x600s ; Chroma filtersEquipment: Planewave L-600 w/CDK-24 & PW Focuser, SBIG STX 16803, SB & position filter wheel, AOX The Cone Nebula is a H II region approximately 2,700 lights years from Earth. The Cone Nebula is part of the larger complex NGC 2264 called The Christmas Tree Cluster. The darkness of the cone is because it consists of cold molecular hydrogen and dust that is in front of the emission nebula of the star S Monocerotis. This entire nebula is approximately 7 light years long.  I took this data in Nov of 2021 and began processing it in Dec of 2021. I was many years absent from processing Astro work and began to drink from the firehose of PixInsight, a New Photoshop, and a new Web production tool. Life and the immensity of all of this caused a long delay. A few days ago I decided to finish at least a preliminary version of this to celebrate the Christmas Holiday. I’m sure another attempt of processing this once I get better with the tools will yield a better result. I struggled with getter the contrast and color how I wanted it to look and finally just brut forced it. I also just shoved the result onto the internet…lots remain for me to learn here. So…Here it is!
