Description

CTB 1 is a supernova remnant. The age of the supernova is estimated to be 10,000 years. In 1955, American astronomer George Ogden Abell discovered a large arcuate nebula with low surface brightness, which he initially thought was an old planetary nebula. He listed it in his 1955 publication as number 72. In 1965, the American astronomer Beverly T. Lynds published her catalogue of bright nebulae. The nebula is listed there as region H-II LBN 116.81+00.03 (LBN 576). In the second publication of his survey of old planetary nebulae in 1966, G. Abell listed the nebula with the number 85 and a diameter of 2077 x 2077 arcseconds. He described it as an asymmetrical ring with bright spots or regions. He also noted that the center of the CTB-1 extended radio source is 0.4° east of the nebula and could be a supernova remnant. In the images, it looks like a bubble of gas that resembles a cross-section through the human brain with an extension of the spinal cord (medulla oblongata), which is why CTB 1 has earned the nickname "Medulla Nebula". I had collected the material at the end of September, but I tried to process it several times, my most common mistake was to try to extract the bubble structures as much as possible - which didn't look very artificial. Here's a version that I think looks decent enough that I've decided to publish it.
