Description

My first attempt at this open cluster and surrounding nebulosity. I was limited to a 2 hour window after sunset, before heavy mist settled in for the night. After the poor results I have been getting at 210mm with my zoom lens and L-eNhance filter, I tweaked the alignment of the optical train, and reduced the zoom to 150mm at f5.6 - a definite improvement.

The 2 hour image is made up of 15x300s L (L-eNhance filter), and 8x120s each RGB. Captured in Envisage, aligned in Nebulosity and processed in Startools. I tried to protect the stars using masks, and repair some elongation due to rotation, but the garnet star looks worse as a result.

IC 1396 is ionised by a bright star (at the bottom of the image) beside a dense globule IC 1396A - the elephant trunk nebula, (bottom centre in my image), a star factory. At 2,400 LY distant, I am pleased to have captured this detail in my fairly low resolution image.
