Description

NGC 1499 aka the California Nebula is a magnitude 6 (integrated light) emission nebula in the constellation of Perseus. It is named for its shape, which is similar to that of the state of California. It lies around 1000 light years from Earth. Its glow is due to radiation from the mag 4 O7 star, Xi Persei (Menkib), a hot blue giant, which can be seen in the lower center of the image. A number of background galaxies can be seen around the nebula.

Image acquisition using CCD Autopilot. Initial processing was done using Maxim DL with subsequent processing with Photoshop. The Ha channel was used as the Luminance to supply additional nebular detail.
