Description

Beautiful M33 is a spiral galaxy nearly 3 million light-years away in the constellation Triangulum. Its 50,000 light-year diameter is half the size of its neighbor, the Milky Way. The galaxy is a member of a galaxy cluster called the Local Group and is in a gravitational relationship with the Andromeda galaxy. The mass of the galaxy is between 10 and 40 billion solar masses, half of which is made up of interstellar matter, dust and gas. Thanks to this, the star formation activity is significant compared to the two other spiral galaxies of the Local Group, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way. Many bright (red) hydrogen emission nebulae can be identified in the arms of the galaxy, which are regions of strong star formation. The Triangulum is currently approaching the Andromeda Galaxy and a more violent encounter will occur in 2.5 billion years. It can be seen halfway between the Andromeda and Aries constellations even with a telescope with a lower magnification, but with a good eye and under exceptional observation conditions, it can even be seen with the naked eye if one knows where and what to look for.
