Description

Star Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation Leo and one of the brightest stars in the night sky¹. It is actually a quadruple-star system composed of four stars that are organized into two pairs¹³. The main star, Regulus A, is a blue-white subgiant star that is orbited by a white dwarf companion¹². The other pair, Regulus BC, consists of two main sequence stars of spectral types K2 and M4¹.

Regulus has been regarded as one of the leading stars in the sky for some 2000 years and its name means "little king" or "prince" in Latin¹². It was also one of the four "royal stars" of ancient Persia and was associated with kingly power in many cultures²³.

Regulus is about 79 light-years away from Earth and has an apparent magnitude of 1.35, making it the 21st brightest star in the night sky¹².
