Description

It has been a while since I made an open cluster the primary subject of one of my images. When a clear night showed up with a 35%-illuminated, waxing crescent Moon, I decided that it would be a good opportunity to shoot a target of this kind. I chose the infrequently imaged NGC 1245, a pretty open cluster in the constellation Perseus. This billion-year-old cluster contains about 200 members and is located about 9,800 light years away.

Scattered about the image are a number of distant galaxies. The catalogue designation of some of these galaxies may be found in Jim Thommes' fine annotated image of this field. The distance to a few of the galaxies in billions of light years is included in Jim's image below their catalogue designations.
