Description

An interesting arching prominence showing an exchange of gas plasma between the two separate prominence sections. For a sense of scale, the distance from end to end spans 140,000 miles, the height measures about 65,000 miles with an inside opening reaching 15,000 miles. That's enough room to stack two earths inside the arch. The animation spans from 13:06-14:02 UT (56 minutes) using 29 separate frames to create the animation. The seeing was good to fair.

For a more detailed explanation about the physics of the activity, I would like to hand that over to my dear friend Andrew Rosado, who is pursuing his PhD in Astro-Physics. He knows way more about the dynamics of what is going on and I hope you find his description interesting and educational. I know I will!

From Andrew:
This is an extremely defined solar prominence, it’s rather well structured and clear in the animation which is very interesting to see. Distinctly visible are magnetic field lines guiding the ionized jets of plasma along. As I went over in a prior post; the jets of plasma are thermally insulated by the magnetic field, as a result the thermal gradient results in a differing optical density and therefore perceived contrast. Otherwise this is an impressive animation demonstrating a very classic prominence.

If you’re interested in a bit more about me and the telescope, feel free to watch a presentation that I gave to The Astro Imaging Channel (awesome site) on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm5boF-5hpc&t=3370s
