Description

Messier 11 - the Wild Duck Cluster
---
The Wild Duck Cluster (also known as M11 and NGC 6705) is an open cluster located in the Scutum constellation. It gets its "popular" name from the way its brightest stars form a triangle resembling a flock of ducks. But, in my eyes, it can also resemble a single duck, if you look at it from a certain angle. 😄

Unlike the more gravitationally bound globular clusters, open clusters are only loosely bound by gravity and comprised of much "younger" stars. Of course, on a cosmic scale, the age of these "young stars" is still measured in 10s to 100s of millions of years. M11 is ~6,200 light years away from Earth, containing over 2,900 stars.

This image was a "collaborative" attempt with a colleague who owns a SkyMax-127 AZ GoTo. While an alt-az mount isn't too suitable for accurate (and long) tracking, the results were still pretty good - also owing to the fact the session took place at a rather dark location (Bortle 3).
