Description

Close up of M27 The "Dumbell" Nebula. THIS Picture I'm Proud of. I shot this last night and just finished processing it. 52 pictures, 60 seconds each (52 total exposure minutes) and 7 darks all at 1600 ISO. Processed with Camera raw, Deep Sky Stacker and Photoshop 2015CC.

The nebula was formed when an evolved, red giant star ejected its outer envelope near the end of its lifetime. The expanding cloud of gas becomes visible once the hot core of the star, visible near the center, is exposed and the high-energy, ultraviolet light from the core ionizes the cloud. The Dumbbell nebula is about 850 light-years away from Earth and about 1.5 light-years in diameter. — at Maury Lewin Memorial Astronomical Observatory.
