NGC 6820 in Ha

NGC 6820 is an emission nebula that surrounds open cluster NGC 6823 in the constellation Vulpecula, near M27, the Dumbbell Nebula. The most striking feature is the trunk-like pillar of dust and gas protruding from the east side of the nebula towards the open cluster, NGC 6823 in the west. The center of the open cluster is about two million years old and is predominantly represented by many young, bright blue stars. Outer parts of the cluster intimately involving pillars of emission nebula NGC 6820, contain even younger stars. The huge pillars of gas and dust are probably formed when surrounding gas and dust is pushed and eroded away by radiation from nearby stars. Remarkable dark globules of gas and dust are also visible in the nebula, much as is seen in the better known Eagle Nebula in Serpens or the Lagoon Nebula in Sagittarius. (Source: Wikipedia)

This object first introduced me to narrowband imaging. I saw a beautiful grayscale image of it, then used my DSLR to take a picture of the same area. All I got were stars. I posted a query on CN asking how to get all those towering dust clouds and gas, and the answer was long-exposure with narrowband filters.

Version B was my first attempt at processing in PixInsight (plus a little Photoshop CC). I think it's quite a bit better than the ImagesPlus version (A), especially in the fainter areas, and with almost no noise!

This was the first decent image with my Atik One 6.0 camera.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
