Description

NGC 7293 "The Helix Nebula" is the largest planetary nebula (PN) as seen from earth, located in the constellation Aquarius. This object is the closest to the Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae. The estimated distance is about 700 light-years away, spanning about 2.5 light-years. The age is estimated to be 10,600 years. The Helix Nebula has sometimes been referred to as the "Eye of God" as well as the "Eye of Sauron".

This planetary nebula is probably the best in the sky as it is quite large although dim that could show lots of details. Unfortunately, the best time this object is in the sky is in rainy season to early winter in Thailand that the sky is normally cloudy and humid. By the time the sky is clear, the object is already too low in the sky. Because of this, I did not have much time to correct its lights during each imaging session thus the images I got so far had very weak signals. To create this image, I decide to use all of my available data, 3 imaging sessions, going back as far as 2003. The equipment that I used to capture its lights vary from low to high resolution as follows :-

24 Nov 2003 SBIG ST-10XME, Takahashi FSQ-106 at 530 mm f/5, Losmandy G-11 from Phuhin Rongkla

14-15 Dec 2009 SBIG ST-10XME, Takahashi TOA-130, 1,000 mm f/7.7, Astro-physics 900 GTO from Phuhin Rongkla

22 November 2014 SBIG STT-8300, Takahashi CCA-250, 1,250 mm f/5, Astro-physics 1200 GTO from Pakchong Nakornratchasima

All together, the combined image has a total exposure of 242 minutes or roughly 4 hours.
