Description

Sh2-280 is also known as LBN 970. There are a few dark nebulae (Dobashi and TGU) around Sh2-280. It is located about 2.25 degrees south of its more famous neighbor - the Rosette Nebula in Monoceros.

The LBN story is interesting. LBN 970, 971, 972, and 973 are all located at the same point in Lynds catalog. That's because she only provided Hours:Min of RA and Degrees:Min of DEC (no seconds) rather than providing a more precise location as well as the general "looseness" of location data. But they are listed in her catalog having different brightness and size and all associated with the general nebulosity she designated as "85".
