Description

The Heart Nebula (also known as the Running dog nebula), IC 1805, Sharpless 2-190, is some 7500 light years away from Earth and is located in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way in the constellation Cassiopeia.

The nebula's intense red output and its morphology are driven by the radiation emanating from a small group of stars near the nebula's center.

The defining star cluster at the core of IC 1805, The Heart Nebula, is Melotte 15. There are several bright stars here, some of them nearly 50 times mass of the Sun, and many more dim stars that are only a fraction of the Sun's mass.

This image was captured in September, October, and November 2022 and is comprised of 319 240s exposures, or 21.26 hrs.  Image acquisition using APT and PHD2.  Image processed manually in PixInsight.
