Description

At magnitude 8, this nebula is bright, but consider that it is not in our Milky Way galaxy, but 160,000 light years distant in the Large Magellenic Cloud.  Were this nebula as close at the Orion Nebula it would cast shadows.  My narrowband images show nebulostiy even in the linear state.

In the write up NASA included with the recent Webb image of this, they noted that "The Tarantula Nebula [AKA NGC 2070] is the largest and brightest star-forming region in the Local Group, the galaxies nearest our Milky Way. With so many photons flowing our way, I was able to be more selective with subs, shedding those over 1.7-1.8".  A snafu over 2 nights where my filter wheel didn't move caused me to overload on OIII.  So the balance of data was not the usual, but extra OIII is usually better than extra Ha.  

Another benefit of the brightness was that it allowed me to do a straight SHO mix and no need to create a psuedo-luminance.  I was able to just produce the SHO and then, after removing the stars, I did a color calibration on the enitre nebula.  This white balanced the colors and give a good starting point for tweaking color channels to separate structures and give more color contrast.  

The big challenge with this object is stretching to reveal the fainter sections while keeping detail and color in the highlights.  I think of HDRMT as a tool for galaxy cores only.  But I used HDRMT on the entire field of the starless nebula to control those bright highlights and bring more contrast to the core.  The dimmer areas were bright up with curves, brightness and contrast adjustments in PS while the core was masked.  

The RGB data was color calibrated with the excellent new Spectrophotometric Color Calibration tool.  The stars were then separated and used as a Screen blend layer in Photoshop over the starless SHO image.  

This is the third light image with the CDK17.  I captured another large southern galaxy between NGC 253 and this one but I was eager to process this nebula after years of seeing others work on it.  This was predominantly captured with a bright moon high in the sky BTW.
