With an estimated distance of ~2480 light years, it is located on the outer edge of the Orion arm of the Milky Way. The nebula surrounds the star HD 259431, also known as V700 Monocerotis, a brilliant massive Orion variable that fluctuates irregularly between magnitudes 8.62 and 8.91.
