Description

Leo I is a dwarf spheroidal galaxy located just 20 arcminutes north of Regulus (the Little King), also called Qalb Al Asad (the Lionheart). It is the brightest star in Leo, a blue giant of magnitude 1.35, making Leo I difficult to see. It was not discovered visually until 1990. It is 9.8' x 7.4' in size. I programmed exposures of just 90 seconds with RGB filters and just 30 seconds with a luminance filter, with 12 hours of exposure to try to define stars. The dominant tone is blue, as is usually the case in dwarf galaxies, although dotted with numerous red stars. Leo I belongs to the local group of the Milky Way and is at a distance of 820 thousand light years. However, Regulus is much closer, 80 light years away.
