Description

M31, the largest galaxy in the local group is characterized as one of the most beautiful objects in the heavens. Hurtling towards us at 110km per second, it is theorized that it will collide with our own Milky Way galaxy in approximately 4 billion years. Such interactions are common in small groups of galaxies that are connected by gravity. M33 may have already interacted with M31 as there exists an ion trail between them them. It is likely that if the the two galaxies do collide that they will eventually merge into a larger irregular spiral of perhaps an elliptical galaxy.
