IC 2177 is a region of nebulosity that lies along the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. It is a roughly circular H II region centered on the Be star HD 53367. This nebula was discovered by Welsh amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts and was described by him as, "pretty bright, extremely large, irregularly round, very diffuse."

The name Seagull Nebula is sometimes applied by amateur astronomers to this emission region, although it more properly includes the neighboring regions of star clusters, dust clouds and reflection nebulae. This latter region includes the open clusters NGC 2335 and NGC 2343. [Source: Wikipedia]

The image was captured with the TMB80SS (mounted on the "classic" Meade 12"LX200). The optical train included the Atik 383L+m, EFW2 and Orion Field Flattener at F6.3 (i.e. native 504mm FL). Guiding was done with the Solomark F50 guidescope and Lodestar camera combo. Astronomik's Ha, OIII and SII narrow band filters were used. All subs were taken at 1x1 bin, and -10C and 10 minutes each.

Ha : 27 subs (4.50 hr) on Mar 19th, 20th and 21st.

OIII : 11 subs (1.83 hr) on Mar 19th, and 21st.

SII : 12 subs (2.00 hr) on Mar 19th, and 20th .

Processing was with PixInsight, following (for the most part) kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th, 2013. Ha was used to develop the Luminance image. Ha, OIII and SII were collected for the color mix. North is up, and this is a slight crop. With the refractor's focal length, the gull's wings got clipped a bit.

If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
