Description

"A mere 11 million light-years away, Centaurus A is the closest active galaxy to planet Earth. Spanning over 60,000 light-years, the peculiar elliptical galaxy, also known as NGC 5128,  is apparently the result of a collision of two otherwise normal galaxies resulting in a fantastic jumble of star clusters and imposing dark dust lanes. Near the galaxy's center, leftover cosmic debris is steadily being consumed by a central black hole with a billion times the mass of the Sun. As in other active galaxies, that process likely generates the enormous radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray energy radiated by Centaurus A. " [Extracted from NASA APOD March 2022]

The total of 23.2 hrs of LRGBHa data in this image were collected by DeepSKyWest at Rio Hurtado, Chile between 30 Dec 2022 and 21 Feb 2023.

The tight framing of this image was intended to focus on the very complex structure of this "Cen A" target, but I was surprised to see in the upper left edge of the image the fairly strong Ha emission signal measured from a hydrogen jet (inner filament "Jet A" in the literature) that is emitted from its massive central black hole.  There are also outer jet filaments (Jets B and C) that are larger in extent and at a greater distance in roughly the same direction but out of the frame of this image.  However, reprocessing the larger-frame raw data for the Ha channel that should have contained at least the outer Jet B, there was no significant Ha signal. (Virtually all of the Jet A signal here was in the Ha channel).

Version C: (now "Original"):  Backed off on BxT almost entirely to better control the AI.Slight vertical crop to emphasize the jet more.

Version D: Removed the slight vertical crop for better balance.
