Description

The Ring Nebula, M57, is a planetary nebula in the constellation Lyra and lies 2300 light years away. It was formed when its red giant parent star expelled the ionized gas into the surrounding interstellar medium. What remains is the ionized shell of gas and a white dwarf star. This image was taken with narrowband filters, so the white dwarf is not visible, but the much fainter second outer shell is visible.
