Description

NGC 4565

Commonly known as the Needle Galaxy, NGC 4565 is a barred spiral galaxy (not unlike our own Milky Way Galaxy, but one-third larger) about 45 million light years away. The beautiful darker ribbon-like structures running the length of the galaxy are composed of dust, and the glowing yellowish bulge in the centre that marks it as a "barred" is made up of cooler, older stars.

DATA/PROCESSING

The data for this galaxy was provided by the RASC Robotic Telescope, and was imaged in June of 2021. It consists of 4 hours of RGB data, along with 4 hours of luminance. Large dust motes, internal reflections and star halos posed quite a challenge here, but the detail in the dust lanes was a joy to process and didn't take much coaxing to reveal itself. Many thanks to the RASC imaging team as always!
