Description

Shown here as a narrowband image in Ha is NGC7000, also know by its common name, The North American Nebula. This emission nebula is located in the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan) some 1,500 light years from the Earth. In this area of Cygnus we find the familiar shape of the North American Continent in an uncommon location - right before our eyes (and imaging cameras) in the night sky high overhead in our summer skies.

If you look closely at this image and using just a modicum of your imagination, you can make out the "East Coast" of North America along with "Florida" as a stubby projection of nebulosity, the "Gulf of Mexico" formed by a dark area of cosmic dust, "Mexico" itself along with "Central America" and even a semblance of the "Panama Canal" in the lower part of this image. Also visible in this image is a W-shaped cosmic ridge of emission on the west coast of "Mexico/Central America" called the "Cygnus Wall." This wall consists of ionized Hydrogen atoms recombining with electrons sculpted by energetic radiation from the region's hot young massive stars.

Note: Diffraction spikes associated with the brightest stars in this image have been enhanced slightly using Star Spikes by ProDigital Software making for a dramatic effect.
