Description

The Rosette Nebula is a monstrous HII region in Monoceros, just east of Orion's left shoulder. The many dark regions closer to the center are Bok Globules, dense clouds of cold gas and dust, theoretically held together by dark matter. The 'tuning fork' pictured here is approximately 2 light years from tip to tip, and actually points toward NGC 2244, the open cluster at the Rosette's heart.
