Description

The image was taken on a mountain top on a clear dark moonless Night, fine details like the surrounding dwarf galaxies and fine spiral arms in the galaxies "suburbs" can be seen.

The galaxy is about 2.5 million light years away which is pretty close for such a large galaxy. That is why it appears very big in our sky and the bright center can be seen with the naked eye - the galaxy is also racing with 110 kilometers per second towards us. In about 4 billion years it is going to collide with our home galaxy merging to one giant elliptical galaxy.
